ur Rotarian of the Day today is Janice Nicklas. Janice is a native Tulsan, born at St. John Medical Center, and attended Lee School Elementary. After graduating from Edison High School, she received a BA degree from the University of Oklahoma and a master’s degree in social work from the University of Michigan.
After working as a school social worker in Ann Arbor, Michigan, she “retired” to raise her two children, Kari Nicklas Bourland and Peter Nicklas, becoming a two-term PTA president, soccer mom, President of the League of Women Voters, and Treasurer of the Junior League of Lawton, OK.
In 1980, she returned to school to work on a second master’s degree in urban studies at the University of Tulsa. She served as a student intern at the Community Service Council of Greater Tulsa and joined the staff in l985 to work on Tulsa’s first child care study. Over the years as a Senior Planner at CSC, she has been the author of three other needs assessment studies: Tulsa’s Hispanic Population, Tulsa’s Gay Community, and a Needs Assessment for HIV Prevention and Care Services in Tulsa.
As director of the Tulsa Community AIDS Partnership since l993, she has raised $2.3 million for Tulsa HIV/AIDS programs. Since l994, she has served as the City Supervisor for 96 National AIDS Fund AmeriCorps members. She was named as one of five “Women of the Year” by the Tulsa Chapter of Women in Communications for her work with women and AIDS. In 2000, she was named as the “AIDS Grantmaker of Year” by Funders Concerned about AIDS in Washington, D.C. She received a “Community Hero” Award from Tulsa Oklahomans for Human Rights in 2005.
In addition, she has been a member of the U.S. Duathlon Team, representing her age group in eight world competitions. She has completed more than 150 triathlons and five marathons in the past 24 years.

Club Assembly
ur speaker today is Andy Hogan. Andy is the historical guide and interpreter for the Will Rogers Memorial Museum in Claremore, Oklahoma. He has worked as a volunteer for the Museum for the past five years. His sense of humor and physical resemblance to Will Rogers with his cowboy hat and boots will make you feel that Will is in the room with us. Andy is an avid runner and frequently wins his age group in Oklahoma races.

Last week…
- Our ROD last week was Don den Daas, and we had a club assembly.
- Happy birthday to Steve Gray and Jack Koehle!
- The final episode in the saga of the Dopp & den Daas dictionary delivery is that they will pay for thesauruses for the kids as fourth graders.
- Dolly told us about the Rotary Ann’s membership tea, held Wednesday, May 6. They gave out five nursing scholarships this year, and Dolly got a $500 Biscuit Acres donation.
- District assembly was May 2. A 9th grader won the 4-Way Test Speech Contest.
- Boots & Barbecue is May 15-16. Ask Don for more information.
- May 28 is the Par 3 Shoot-Out, an ALS benefit.
- Board meetings are moving to Wednesday nights at Leon’s – the old S&J Oyster.
- Our next district governor has a goal of 6,110 members in district 6110 in the year 2010. We’ve made 15 teams, each responsible for getting one new member, in order for our club to meet its membership goal. We want 75 members total.
- If you have ideas for a permanent fundraiser or a charity to donate to, let Don know.
- Our next international project will likely be getting electricity to a school in Uganda.
- It’s only 7 weeks till the Change of Horses! Keith, are you ready? How about you, Don?
- Here’s the weekly update on Biscuit Acres:
- - We will NOT be having a Founder’s Banquet. The grand opening is still June 6.
- - We’ve raised about $40,000. That’s $10,000 and we still need about $2,000 for Randy’s matching grant.
- - If you’ve got boxes out, remember to check them and bring the money in!
