Today’s ROD is President, David Hughes. As our President, David is fulfilling his father’s aspirations. His father, David L. Hughes, became a Southsider right after the club’s charter, served as Club Service Director in 1960-61 and as Vice President in 1961-62, but not as President. David’s mother was a Rotary Ann back at a time when ladies could only be involved in Rotary in that organization.
David was proposed by Harold Lamprich and inducted into Southside on October 1, 1992. He is an R.I. Benefactor, Paul Harris Fellow, and Southside Star. He has served in many Club Director positions, and spearheaded our work with our adopted school Springdale Elementary.
David is a real estate broker licensed with Prudential Detrick Realty where he has achieved membership in the Chairman’s Circle and is presently in The Leading Edge Society. Take a moment and ask David what this means. I am sure it has something to do with high sales activity and overall performance excellence. He has been a director of both the Greater Tulsa Association of REALTORS and the Oklahoma Association of REALTORS.
David plays trumpet and fluegel horn in the Asbury New Covenant Orchestra. He played for many years with the gospel big band, Tulsa Praise Orchestra but travels and a very aggressive performance schedule forced him to remember that he has a wife and family deserving of his time!
Leslie has been his wife for 27 years; they have two sons, David and Mike, a daughter Hillary, and a daughter-in-law, Jennifer. David loves riding his Harley and watching football, but really looks forward to continuing the family’s favorite past-time which is tent camping with their labradors in Colorado’s San Juan Mountain Range, which is known for having the highest bear population per capita in the world!
Today’s Program
Club Assembly
The club assembly will cover two areas. First is an overview of RI’s recommended club structure and the associated changes that will need to be made to our charter.
Second is our 50th year anniversary. This will be celebrated as part of the Change of Horses on June 26th. We’re trying to create something special – that is just about Southside, it’s fellowship, it’s spirit, it’s service, and what makes us one of the best clubs in Rotary. Southside is it’s members, and you will make up this years program. Although we should, we’re not going to roast David (our time limit and the average age of the club precludes this), but we want to honor this club’s service to Rotary.
We would like to hear some of your best recollections of your time in Southside. As part of the Club Assembly we will work on putting together your memories. Collect up your:
- Most memorable event?
- Most memorable project?
- Most exciting activity?
- Funniest Story?
- Recollections of past and present members?
- Important things which should not be forgotten?
- Your greatest lesson from Rotary?
- Your most profound moment?
- Past Presidents: Steve Glenn is working on gathering lots of information. I would ask each of you to put together your recollection of your year as president. Include the projects and events of your year. Please put together one page, including your. If you can include the names your Board members.
- Members: If you have any “things” – papers, pictures, water well drill bits from Bolivia, or what ever, please let Steve Glenn know. We want to put together some tables where people can look over some of our history, perhaps do a show and tell. Now if you’ve been in the club more than 10 years you have something to share that will be valuable to all.
Finally, we would like to remind you to invite past members, wives, dignitaries, media, District, Zone or International leadership to join us in our celebration. This evening will be fun, with a quick look back, and a glimpse of tomorrow. We can have a wonderful evening in celebration of the last 50 years as we begin our next 50 years, but the program will count on you!
This will be a special evening, you won’t want to miss out, but without you, and your history we will short change our members. Please e-mail Brett with your thoughts at brett@brettbrough.com
Southside Quick Notes
- Prospective new member – Benjamin Gibbs – Stock Broker
- Please remember that we need about 8 volunteers at the Rotary Medical Supply Warehouse Saturday May 31st from 7A.M. to 11 P.M.
- The Foundation does have money available for donations. We do ask for a written request that thoroughly explains the needs. Some of the things the Board takes into consideration prior to voting on a request include:
- 501C3
- A Mission Statement
- Description of how funds are to be used
- Prefer not to be a ministry
- Must have a face with the request – for an example a blanket request for the DAV will probably not be approved, but a request from the local branch of the DAV for a project to assist a returning veteran who has a need would be considered.
- In the past the Board has also attempted to give priority to requests coming from members.
