Southsider Quick Notes

Last week…
- Our ROD last week was Keith, and we had a club assembly.

- Jerry Ramey’s mother died. Please keep him and his family in your prayers.

- Engineers Without Borders is having a wine-tasting fundraiser on Thursday, August 27, at 7 p.m. at the Tulsa Garden Center. The funds will go to support the EWB-OKEAST and EWB-TU trips to Bolivia in November to build eco latrines. The cost is $45 in advance and $50 at the door. In addition to wine, there will be appetizers and desserts (provided by Ti Amo’s), music, flamenco dancing, and a silent auction.

- Janice Nicklas discussed the Green Project Committee, which she and Tom Wilson are a part of. They’re working on a sustainability project that our club can support with a yearly fundraiser. One of the things being discussed is awarding a business or individual for being environmentally friendly. If you have any ideas, talk to Janice or Tom, or come to one of their meetings.

- Phil Scott discussed some of the events we have coming up this year: Scotch and Cigar Night, Christmas and Valentine’s parties, the Dictionary Project, bell ringing for the Salvation Army, Medical Supplies Network, Be Wise Immunize, the Four-Way Test Speech Contest, breakout meetings, Springdale dates (which we’ll try to get further in advance), and the year-end awards.

- John Benjamin had a Biscuit Acres update. Phase 1 is almost complete, and they’re adding water stations and shade sails right now. We’re $20,000 in the black toward phase 2. There is a volunteer meeting Thursday, August 13, at 7 p.m. at Biscuit Acres.

- Also, John Benjamin is heading up a volunteer committee for the United Way. They’ll be delivering packets to various businesses at the end of August and beginning of September for the United Way donation drive.

- Donna Petty talked about RI giving. So far we have about $900 for the 2009-2010 Rotary year, and she has the papers for direct transfers if you’d like to sign up for that. Also, there will be a Zone meeting at the Southern Hills Marriott in September, and we’ll need volunteers to pick Rotarians up at the airport.

- Jessica Cox is our new membership chair, and we’ve got some updates on how this membership drive is going to work. Medhi says it will be $5 for guest meals now, so it will be much less expensive to invite somebody. Our team information is now on the website, and team leaders need to remind their teammates to bring guests. We’ll be updating our membership brochure PDF, and creating a club blue book to educate guests on what Rotary is and what we do.

- Be sure to check the website for our speaker list through October. Information on it is subject to change, but we’ll do our best to keep it updated!

- Next week, our speaker is Marcia Mitchell from the Little Lighthouse.
